A customer looked everywhere for a 9' long dining table with a drawer and had no luck.
After quick chat with us we had a plan and material picked out.
We went with Walnut and are using a dark stain to give the table a vintage look.
With 3" square legs the table is very stable.

One of my favorite customers who is a world traveler and wood fan recently returned with reclaimed wood from Lake Ontario. When logs are waterlogged they sink to the bottom, they will sit there for year until they can be reclaimed. After long chats about the best use of the wood we came up with this entry way unit.
The wood has been treated with two coats of pure tung oil and 3 coats of varethane.
The beautiful grains and the birds eye make it pure one of a kind.

My customer wanted a new boardroom table and credenza for the office expansion. He wanted something natural and very unique. We started with recycled wood from a 100 year old building. The problem with that is nails, lots of nails.
I came up with the idea of Maple slab wood. The wood I picked is all from the same tree.This way you can match the edges of each slab and keep the gaps small. The other wood is brown maple.
When picking wood I look for character in the grain, this gives the wood more of an empact.
The dark wood is wenge. I used the wenge to make the transition between the wood along with adding inlay to
tie all the wood together.

This is one of the nicest tables I've made in some time. The main wood is 1 3/4" thick Roasted curly maple.
Maple is placed in a drying kiln and roasted until it reaches the desired color. This gives the look of exotic wood but grown in North America. The base was stained dark and the table top was placed on Four 1 /34 thick solid steel rods.

We are proud to host a very special show on November 26th, titled, “Bluenose II: Art of the Legend.”
The exclusive show will feature the work of four artists -- painter Peter Matyas, photographers Maurice Crosby and Mark Doucette, and woodworker Jason Cullen -- who have each been creatively inspired by Bluenose II. Limited edition prints and products will be available to purchase at the event and the artists will each be present to sign their work.

The Show will run from 3-7pm on Saturday 26th November at One Stop Wood Shop in The Piazza at Bishop’s Landing.

We hope to see you then! We'll have some wine (provided by our fabulous neighbours at Bishop's Cellar) and nibbles for you and the artists will all be on hand to discuss the work they are doing.

I was unsure what to do with it. Yew wood has such a dramatic grain I needed to do something special.

Like most old houses in Halifax the main living room has a large fireplace that pushes out into your room.Leaving you with two instead spaces. Some build bookcases or storage space.
In this case I decided to go with a simple desk and bookcase. Since I had space I went with a little higher bookcase to fill the room. This unit is not built in and can be moved anytime.

I changed the a design little. Making the towers a little bigger and using a heavy steel to give it presence.
The colour of the maple top takes light flecks from the existing floor. The table looks great with the chairs the customer picked.

I just finished a Bluenose II keepsake box. This material was originally one of the ribs in the restoration project.
This creation I decided to give the top more of a treasure chest look.Carved by hand and made of solid laminated Angelic.

This creation will be auctioned off at "Dancing for our stars" Saturday night at the Cunard centre.

FALL INSPECTION CHECKLIST
EXTERIOR

❏ Check for cracks in asphalt or concrete on driveway, sidewalks, and paths. These can be a tripping hazard, and can invite water that will do more damage during the colder months.
❏ Make sure retaining walls have no bulges or loose areas. One heavy rain or snowfall, and you could have a mud slide on your hands. Make sure the weep holes built into the wall are clear.
❏ Examine porches and decks for sagging ceilings, loose rails or boards, and damaged steps. Check to
make sure the posts are still firmly in the ground and not loose, or worse yet, rotted completely out of the footing.
❏ Give fences and stone walls-and their gates-a once-over for leaning and loose parts, which could fall or blow off during a storm.
❏ Look for stains on the siding, which could be a sign of a water problem or a roof issue.
❏ Look for signs of insect or bird nests in soffits, eaves, or attic vents. If you see signs of animal waste in a certain area, look around for the possible nest or culprit.
❏ Take note of where paint is peeling, brick mortar is missing, or stucco is cracking on the house's siding.
❏ Look for leaning on the chimney. Check that the flashing is in good condition, and not peeling up or missing.
❏ Check gutters and downspouts for debris or improper pitch, especially during a rain storm. Look for
stains on the soffit, which could be a sign of a leak.
❏ Examine the foundation for cracks and bulges.
❏ Take a look at the sill, checking for rot and insects. Look for raised mud channels, which indicates the presence of termites. Use a sharp knife or other probe to see how much the wood gives.
❏ Make sure the grade of the ground around the foundation slopes away from the house.
❏ Look at the roofing. Are there cracks, missing shingles, crumbling pieces? Check asphalt for dry,
blistering, alligatoring, or curling shingles; wood for rot and splits; slate and tile for broken pieces; and flat roofs for holes. Be especially vigilant under trees, where falling branches or jumping animals could have done damage. Once the leaves have fallen, look more closely at where branches touch the house.
❏ Examine the flashing and vent/chimney caps for missing or damaged parts. Look for rust.
❏ Look for moss and other debris on the roof.

PLUMBING, including BATHROOMS and LAUNDRY
❏ Look for signs of leaks in all exposed pipes, and in areas where pipes run through the walls or
foundation.
❏ Look for signs of corrosion, which could indicate a problem with the water, or with the pipe itself. Watch for green stains around brass and copper fittings and on shutoff valves, a sign of either corrosion orelectrolysis caused by mismatched metals. This will cause leaks and bad connections if left uncorrected.
❏ Check the water pressure. Low pressure could mean a problem with the line or just sediment buildup in the faucet aerator or shower head.
❏ Check drains for speed of drainage - a slow drain may have a clog or a blocked vent pipe. Look for a full swirling drain; bubbling drains are a sign of a problem.
❏ Flush the toilets to make sure they operate properly. Open their tanks and look for worn or missing
parts. Then wait around for a few minutes to see if the toilet runs after a pause, a sign of a slow leak.
❏ Look inside the burner chamber of the water heater for rust flakes. Check the flame; it should be an even blue, with no yellow. A yellow flame indicates soot or a problem with the gas-air mixture, meaning the jets need cleaning.
❏ Drain the water heater to remove sediment that has settled to the bottom. Sometimes leaks in faucets
are caused by hard water wearing out the washers.
❏ Watch out for cracked tiles in the shower area or around sinks. Tap on tiles looking for loose or hollow ones, which could be masking rotted backerboard behind them.
❏ Check on the state of the tub and shower caulking to see if its time to replace it.
❏ Look for evidence of mildew where water has a chance to stand for longer periods
❏ Manipulate the toilet base to be sure it doesn't rock, which might mean a leak has damaged the floor
around it.
❏ Look for cracks on the toilet tank or bowl or on sinks
❏ Slide shower doors do check for sticking, rust, or obstructions. Examine the gaskets around the door
glass for gaps and tears.
❏ Turn on the shower and bath faucets and check for leaks around handles and valves. Are they easy to use, or harder to turn on and off? Check set screws around escutcheon plates.
❏ Unscrew the shower head and look for collected sediment in it that could be lowering the water pressure.
❏ Examine vent fans for obstructions or dust. Turn them on: If it sounds really loud, the bearings may be worn out or a flapper may have gotten stuck.
❏ Check washer hoses for signs of aging (cracks or brittleness) or leaks.
❏ Check dryer vents for tears. Vacuum or brush out lint in hose and around lint screen inside unit. Look for lint around the floor or on the wall, indicating a clog in the vent hose.

This is a large room and is on the dark side of the house. We decided to build a large light color cabinet around the fireplace and include large mirrors in the corners to bounce light around the room. The molding on the cabinet matches a fireplace in the front of the house. Another happy customer.

I have recently teamed up with the L.S.A. The Lunenburg ship Alliance.
This organization is a group of Three companies combined to work on the project of restoring Bluenose II to her former glory. I have been given the privilege to create works of art out of cut off pieces from the ship's building process. Each piece will be one of a kind.
Pieces will be shown on my website and on a partner's Mark Doucette .
This will be an ongoing process and I will be blogging about it.

The first piece is a keepsake box made from one of the ribs of Bluenose II.

The idea was to create a bed that had a warm worn look. I used solid maple and finished with a two stage Danish oil mix. Danish oil gives the wood an aged look. Then finished with coats of varethane for protection.
A large 3 drawer dresser and plenty of storage in the back for playing in.
Kids were very happy.

Moving to the new wood shop

Drying wood is a time consuming process. The rule of thumb is 1" per year. Some of my logs are 36" wide.
Of course their are tricks of the trade to preparing material.
Start by placing your material outside in a covered place with air flow. The material should be off the ground and allow air to flow all around. If you have an idea of what you are going to make you can remove the bulk of the wood. This will help water evaporate. I keep my wood outside for two years. Then bring them into my unheated garage. Finishing the end of the wood with a wax sealer to slow the cracking process.
The wood will sit in the garage for sometimes 2 years. Then into the studio for shaping. At this stage it is important to keep an eye on the wood. If it starts to crack back into the garage or a brown paper bag.
For most of my projects I use a natural oil finish. This helps the wood from drying out and cracking.
This of course my not work. I have had projects in my house for years and one day they crack. Nature does not like to be tamed.

Ben Mclellan is a good friend and a great wood turner. He is an artist that looks for the beauty in wood and will not continue unless he finds it. He will spend days working on a finish and will not let it leave his studio until he is satisfied. Believe me.
I'm amazed at the pieces Ben can turn. As a woodworker myself , he makes the extra effort to hollow out the inside of the vases and also sands them. The odd shape of some bowls are not only difficult to turn but they are also dangerous. A heavy unbalanced bowl could fly off the lath and into a person.

I have some of Ben pieces in our gallery and will have a show coming soon.

We've provided a link at the bottom of this page if you can support the fantastic work that Muscular Dystrophy Canada does we'd be very grateful!

Our good friends are affected by this condition and here we'd like to share their story.

April 22nd, 2008 was the day that our family learnt about a degenerative neuro-muscular disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. It was the day that our precious, vibrant and intelligent 10 month old baby was diagnosed with this incurable disease and the day that changed the direction of our lives.

After much research on SMA, we knew that Van would face many physical challenges. We discovered that he would require assistance from expensive machines to clear his lungs so he could breathe, he would need a wheelchair, braces for his back, a stander to ensure his bones are strong, and numerous other devices to ensure his optimal health. Where is the money going to come from? How are we going to afford all these things that would help him grow to reach his full potential and be a healthy little boy ? How can we NOT provide these devices for him? How can that even be a consideration? The stresses associated with these lingering questions were immense and ominous.

In the fall of the same year, we were referred to our local chapter of Muscular Dystrophy Canada. We knew of the amazing work MDC does for Muscular Dystrophy, but we were not as familiar with the full scope of their mandate, and their incredible support of numerous neuro-muscular conditions including Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

MDC's support has been tremendous, both financially and emotionally. We have been able to acquire life saving equipment either fully funded by MDC or with their support for portions not covered through other programs or private insurance. Without their support, Van would be hospitalized for weeks at a time, on IV medication and oxygen. Their financial support has kept us out of hospital and has enabled us to be proactive with his health.

Additionally, MDC also funds research for many neuro-muscular conditions. A significant amount of funding for SMA comes from donations of which MDC is a leading contributor. As result, of the 600 neuro muscular conditions, Spinal Muscular Atrophy is closest to a cure (National Institute for Health, 2008). Thus, Muscular Dystrophy is not only providing our family with financial support but is also providing our family and many others with real HOPE for the future. HOPE that someday my child wont struggle to breathe due to weak muscles and that he may even feel the weight of his own body touch the ground as he takes his first steps.

Please give generously so that our son and others affected by neuro-muscular conditions can reach their full potential and live a long, productive and happy life.

DIY Friday - House painting

I spoke with a customer about restoring her 100 year plus Victorian Home. I will be repairing and replicating the wood exterior. To start we will be painting the house.
1. Scraping away the loose paint is the first step. You don't have to remove all the paint just parts that are peeling away from the wood.
2. The part that most painters forget is to let the wood dry. Chipped paint will hold water against the wood and help it soak in. I scrape my walls a give 2 good days for the wood to dry.
3. Primer, a good primer, is always needed. It also helps to have the primer tinted to the color of your house.
It's important to force the paint into any cracks. Cracks will let water into the wood and you will be at it again next year.
4. Finish coat. Take Your Time! Make sure the temperature and humidity are right. This will extend the life of your paint by years. Too many people rush and then ask why my paint is on the ground.

DIY - Outdoor Furniture repairs

I know that all my customers properly put all their outdoor furniture away last fall. For all those who didn't, it's time for a little TLC. Any outdoor wood product should be treated every year. When the wood drys out in the summer sun, cracks will appear water gets in the cracks and over winter freezes and makes the crack bigger and so on.
The table I'm repairing has a zinc top and teak bottom.I will sand the zinc to give it a uniform color.Then I will spray it with a clear outdoor metal finish.
Teak is a great product for outdoor furniture, but still needs love. I will sand the wood to remove dirt and open the grains. Then I will apply two coats of teak oil. This will bring back the color and protect the wood.

On a rainy day I decided to look through my sold paintings. Gonzalo has been a favorite of mine. I still have one of his paintings in my personal collection and six showing in the gallery.

Gonzalo Gonzalez Rodriquez was born on the 15th of June 1988 in the Isle of Youth, Cuba. He is the youngest of the Island of Youth’s Avant-Garde artists to come on the scene outside of Cuba.
His artwork enjoyed a handful of influential collectors and dealers. In Italy, Dr. Per Luigi and other known Italian aficionados have launched his art works in galleries in Milan and Florence. In Spain, Pedro Castellano an important film executive and producer has introduced his paintings to Major film directors and Television personalities. Inside Cuba, Gonzalo has had a number of shows including a sell-out show at the Mela Theater in Havana. In Cayman, his works are in boardrooms of financial institutions and sophisticated private collections.

The customer needed the first layer of a three layer piece of maple removed. The hard part is chipping away the wood you don't want and keeping the pieces you do want. Like most things in life, it takes patience.
Now she can re drill the holes.

DIY - Spring Time Lawn Maintenance

Well it's spring, time to get out and play in the grass. Over the winter your grass gets flattened by snow and ice.
The best way to start is using a hard rake to pull up last year's cuttings. If you have a large lawn or are just lazy, you can rent a power rake. Most people are worried they will damage the lawn.Your lawn will look bad, but it will come back better. The raking will remove the old grass and disturbed the soil making it easier for new grass to start. If you want to go chemical free, spread a bag of manure over the lawn, using a light rake spread it around. I know it's a shitty job but it works. You can also put down some more grass seed.
This is a great way to start your lawn off on the right track.
Power Rakes rent for around $50 for half a day.

Elm Bench with Aluminum Legs

I've had this piece of Elm sitting in my studio for 2 years. I could never find a good way to make legs that would complement the natural beauty of the wood. Then it hit me, make the legs as small as possible so you notice the wood first. Sometimes simple is better. This piece of Elm has 3 coats of Pure Tung oil and 4 coats of water base varethane. The legs are solid Aluminum rods with copper ties.

Roasted Birch Sofa Table

A new product I have been using lately is Roasted Birch. This is birch wood that is placed in a kiln at higher temperatures than normal and baked until the desired color is reached. The wood has a dark rich color. The sofa table I just finished has only 100% pure Tung oil as a finish. When I find the right pad I will buff the table with pure Carnuba wax. All finishes are non-toxic. This will give it a almost french polish look. This wood gives you the look of an exotic without cutting down the rain forest.

Butternut Dining Table

A customer wanted a dining table that would complement her kitchen renovation. After a extensive search we decided on Butternut. Butternut is a soft wood grown in N. America, it has a light color base with dark grains.
This is my first dining table made of this wood and already it looks amazing.
After milling the wood and matching the grains to get the best effect, it is glued and will be cut to shape then the real work begins.

Trip to the Lumber Shop

Another great trip to www.halifaxspecialtyhardwoods.com I picked up some Butternut. This wood will be used to make a dining table for a customer.
Something else I had my eye on was the Curly Maple log. The log was cut into 2" thick pieces, then put back together. This way you can match the grain with what your making.

Halifax Specialty has a large selection of wood and I spend a lot of time there looking for new products.
Our dog Molly is looking for wood for a new dog house.
Walnut may be pushing it.

DIY - Deck maintenance

Deck Maintenance

It seems to be a big surprise to most people that you do have to maintain your outside deck.
Most decks are made from treated lumber. Treated lumber should have a protective coating on it after 2 years of installation.
If the decks are not protected they will begin to crack. The cracks will fill with water, in the winter the water freezes and the cracks get bigger.
I recommend to my customers to treat their decks every spring.
Step 1
Buy a bottle of deck cleaner and a scrub brush. This will remove all dirt and prep the deck for sealer.
Stay way from pressure washers. Pressure washers damaged the wood opening up cracks and making your deck furry and nobody wants a furry deck.
Step 2
Buy a good quality deck sealer with a UV protector in it. The sun can do the most damage.
Check the instructions for the best application. Some are different from others.
I tend to use a roller and paint brush to get into all the cracks and crevices.

The project should take you an afternoon, cost about $60 dollars and extend the life of your deck.
Money well spent.

DIY - Exterior Door

Wondering if you have any tricks or tips for installing a new extertior door? There is no side light just the pre-hung exterior door. It is replacing the same size door that is in there presently.

Answer

Installing an exterior door is pretty easy. Starting by attaching the hinge side. Doors work the best when they are level and square. Always check the connection between the door and the weather stripping. Sealing around the door is also very important. A small pin hole will cause a draft over time.
When installing a door caulking and spray foam are your friends.

A customer requested an Elm side Table. After rummaging through my warehouse I found the last of my Elm wood. After some planing, sanding and oiling. A new work of art is born. Thanks to time and some carpenter ants. It's an interesting piece to look at with all the tunnels carved out of the wood.

They have some heavy metal floor grates from an old church. I'm going to cleanup the metal and wrap it in a dark hardwood. In my mind it looks great. We will see.

DIY Weekend - Raised Garden beds

Hi!

Thanks for sharing your expertise. My partner and I are thinking about building some simple raised beds to grow vegetables in this summer. The soil in the yard is in terrible shape so this seems like a good way to designate a certain amount of space that we can put fresh soil in and have good drainage. Do you have any tips on what kind of wood to use, if we should line the beds, or any other tips that will help this weekend project succeed? Thanks in advance!

Answer

Good Day

Raised beds are always a great way to start a garden.
Before putting new soil down, first loosen the old soil to add drainage.
Any wood will do if you line the soil side with a waterproof product like tar paper. Wood will not last long touching ground.
Also allow a place for water to drain. Remember you are building a box and plants can drown.
Minimum of 6" of garden soil. I feel the best is 12".

Another Dining Table

This is another piece of 100 year old Red Elm. This part of the tree is called crotch wood. This is where the tree splits into two branches. The grains on this part of the tree tend to have stronger grain lines. I will take the two parts of this log and make one solid table from it.

100 year old dining table

Over the weekend I decided to start on a great design for a dining table. The 100 year old Red Elms were cut in Halifax about 4 years ago. The tree was posing a safety hazard. I decided to cut the log right down the middle. I will have custom iron legs made so the flat face of the wood will become the table top. Then cover the top in glass. When sitting at the table you will be able to see the grain and tunnels from ants that made this tree their home years ago. J.Cullen

New Wood. What to do?

I just purchased 200 ft of Roasted Walnut Birch wood. This one of my new favorite woods to work with.

The process is to take birch wood and place it into a drying furnace. Then place walnut wood chips into the furnace. The walnut will burn and infuse itself into the birch giving it a dark rich color that smells of coffee.
You get the dark rich color of exotic wood but grown in North America
